I don’t get it. It hasn’t been that long since my pay check trickled into my bank account, not at all. So where did it all go? Four plane tickets, two nights in a hotel, insurance, electricity, phone bill, food – I don’t eat that much! - a dress.. Okay fine, I know perfectly well where it all went. What I don’t get is how people manage to put money aside, month by month, until they eventually can afford a house or a car. At least not after they’ve been living off a student loan for 5 years and have been shopping-starved for most of that time. It’s like being on a strict diet, I imagine – the more you deprive yourself, the more you’ll go nuts and binge on ice cream/dresses and shoes when you finally get the chance. I obviously haven’t got it out of my system yet.
What I have done, however, is taken a strict look at my closet and realized that I really don’t need to shop for quite a while. There are things in there that are practically unworn. And more importantly, I don’t have the closet space for more stuff. So no more. I’m all set for this season.
Student economy was easy. You had your handful of pennies – half of them were used to pay rent, 40% for food, the remaining 10% for “fun”. Now I’ve suddenly got bills flying at me left and right, and the student loan people suddenly want me to pay them back! Rude, right? I suspect my biggest new years resolution this year will be to become a personal economy wiz. A financial superwoman. I’ll be so set, my savings account will have a savings account!
See how happy Maja Moneysaver is? She has only saved 10 dollar bills, but she sure is happy! ;)
